Murdoch Munro M.M. 1895 - 1961 (my grandfather)

Murdoch Munro was my grandfather. He lived in the Loch Broom area of Scotland, in the North Western Highlands. The Munro's have been living in the little crofting village of Ardcharnich (a few miles south of Ullapool) for several generations. The house is called Balnoster. My great grandfather was born there in 1859. So far my family and I have traced our ancestry in Ardcharnich back to 1812.

Murdoch Munro enlisted to the 1/4 Seaforth Highlanders in 1914 at the age of 16. He was on active duty in France from 1914-1918, and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry.

The scope of this project is to digitalize and present online the materials which once belonged to my grandfather. They are contained in his little tobacco cabinet, along with a gurkha knife. Items include letters written to his sister Mary from the trenches of France during World War 1. There are various other documents, a few photographs, medals, and his pipe. An aim for my family and I is to find out why he was awarded the military medal. We also hope to find more family photographs, and photographs of Balnoster. Many have been lost unfortunately.

This site is still under construction, the project a work in progress. I want to thank the Dingwall Museum for their help, and allowing me to scan some of their photographs this past summer. Please check back or email me any questions or if you have any information or pictures...thank you!..eanygard@gmail.com
